Type species: Anetoceras advolvens Erben, 1960, p.56 [OD].

Conch advolute or "quasi-advolute" through the greater part of ontogeny.

Klug, 2001, p.490: Moderately large to large conch, serpenticonic and advolute or sometimes gyroconical; thinly discoidal. Very wide umbilicus with very large umbilical window. Low to moderate whorl expansion rate (1.5 to 1.8) and whorl interspace rate 1 in middle growth stages and 1 to 1.6 in the terminal whorl. Sculpture with coarse rursiradiate ribs and coarse growth lines. Suture line with a small external lobe, a widely rounded lateral lobe, and a shallow internal saddle.

Comparisons (Klug, 2001, p.490): Erbenoceras is the only genus of the Anetoceratinae RUZHENCEV 1957 which has advolute whorls at least in one growth stage. Furthermore, the low number of ribs per whorl is characteristic. Most species have 30 to 50 ribs per whorl.

A: Conch advolute, terminal whorl gyroconic.
C: 30 - 50 ribs/whorl.

Diagnosis after De Baets 2009 (p. 371)

"Moderately to large conch (40–200 mm),

serpenticonic and advolute in the middle whorls or sometimes

gyroconical, thinly discoidal. Shell varies from gyroconical

with the whorls not in contact to partially advolute

with crioconical whorls in the beginning and/ or at the end

of the ontogeny or (almost) totally advolute. Very wide

umbilicus (uw/dm = 0.50-0.70) with very large umbilical

window (5 mm in Erbenoceras advolvens). Low to moderate

whorl expansion rate (1.40-2.00) and whorl interspace

rate 1 in the middle whorls (advolute) and 1.00 to 1.60 in the

terminal whorl, but the whorl interspace rate of the initial

whorl can be as high as 2. Sculpture with coarse, rursiradiate

ribs (30-55 per whorl, RRI: 3-10 and ARI: 4-12) and

coarse growth lines. Suture line with a small external lobe, a

widely rounded lateral lobe, and a shallow internal saddle".
