Type species: Urartoceras abichianum Ruzhentsev, 1959.

[Ruzhentsev, 1959]: The shell is broad, with a narrow tectiform ventral side. The umbilicus is rather broad, with a thick
strongly drawn off edge. The ventral lobe is the same length, if not more, as the first umbilical; in the upper part it is
considerably constricted. The next two lobes are well developed, with large teeth at the base, which are always serrate.
This peculiar genus combines in itself some  of the signs of Araxoceras and Prototoceras, although sharply differing from
each of these. According to the type the suture line is nearer to Araxoceras, according to the form of the shell -- to
Prototoceras. It is slightly different from Araxoceras and Rotaraxoceras by a quite different form of shell, essentially
different profile of the ventral lobe, narrow first saddle, characteristic crenulation; from Prototoceras and Discotoceras --
by thick and strongly drawn off umbilical shoulder, deep ventral lobe, narrow saddles, strong development of the second
umbilical lobe, characteristic crenulation.

[Ruzhentsev 1962, p. 94, Urartoceras:
Conch top-shaped, with wide whorls (width/diameter = 0.55) and thin, roof-like venter.  Umbilicus not very wide
(umbilicus/diameter 0.14), with a thick and strongly protruding rim.  Main lobes quite deep.  Ventral lobe quite thin, tight at
the middle, widening downwards. First saddle slightly wider.  First umbilical lobe strongly serrated at the base.  Second
umbilical lobe well developed and is slightly smaller than first.]
