Type species: Goniatites barbotanus de Verneuil, 1845, p.369 [OD].

A:   Conch subdiscoidal to globular, involute; in adult stages umbilicus very narrow.
B:   Growth lamellae weak, at maturity with ventral sinus.
G:   Height of median saddle reaching 3/4 of height of entire ventral lobe. Seven or eight species.

[Erected without diagnosis; type species poorly known, its holotype being uncertain. Early whorls unknown; according to RUZHENTSEV, 1975, p.42, Schartymites is evolute on inner whorls, but his figure is not based on type material. Schartymites seems to be closely related to Stenoglaphyrites].

[Ruzhentsev & Bogoslovskaia, 1971, p.308 and 1978, p.166: Conch subsphaericone to pachycone and subdiscoidal.  Whorls completely involute, in young specimens even impending.  Umbilicus very tight, in early stages bulb-shaped and in cross section zig-zagged.  Constrictions are normally absent, but sometimes present on the steinkern.  Wide ventral lobe with nearly parallel sides.  Lobe width/height ranges from 1.30-1.45 in adult forms.  Prongs of ventral lobe quite wide.  Height of medial lobe reaches 80% of the whole lobe.]
